Why Are Translators Important in Healthcare?
Healthcare translation and interpretation is not just a convenience — studies on patient safety have repeatedly found that language barriers in clinical settings are linked to higher rates of misdiagnosis, medication errors, and missed follow-up care. A patient who cannot fully understand their diagnosis, a consent form, or discharge instructions is at a genuine disadvantage, regardless of how skilled the treating doctor is.
This applies to written translation (medical records, discharge summaries, consent forms travelling between countries with a patient) and live interpretation (a consultation, an emergency room visit, a specialist appointment). In both cases, the goal is the same: making sure the patient and the medical team are actually working from the same understanding, not an approximation of it.
