Why Technical and Engineering Translation Needs Subject-Matter Experts
Technical and engineering documents — machinery manuals, safety data sheets, CE marking technical files, factory audit reports — use highly specific terminology where a general-purpose translation can be grammatically correct but practically wrong. A torque specification, a safety warning, or a maintenance interval that is slightly mistranslated does not just read awkwardly; it can lead to equipment damage or a safety incident on a factory floor.
This is why technical translation should be handled by linguists with an engineering or technical background, not simply strong general language skills. The vocabulary of industrial safety, mechanical specifications, and quality standards (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, GHS/SDS formats) is its own specialized domain, and getting it right requires someone who understands the underlying engineering concept, not just the words describing it.
